The Frugal Gourmet masthead and page spread was a project that was given to me in my publication design class. I gained an immense amount of knowledge about the intricate details that come with magazine layout design. Everything from the kerning and tracking, spacing and image placement was done in Adobe InDesign . The masthead was made in Adobe Illustrator, but I started building it with hand drawn sketches. I approached this design with the idea of creating a design that exuded simplicity and frugalness while still maintaining a sense of being a high-end logo. I began by building a masthead with shapes and took inspiration from different typefaces online. My first design was built from full and half circles as well as rectangles. From there, I over-simplified the shapes and decided that highlighting one letter in the masthead with a triangle would be more powerful and also readable for the viewer. At first the “A” had a different color circle in front of it and then I decided that using negative space and making the circle into an orange created an intriguing visual that highlighted simplicity and provided a natural feel while still maintaining the idea of being high-end.
